Writing 101 – Commit to a Writing Practice

Prompt #3: “Write about the three most important songs in your life — what do they mean to you? The twist – You’ll commit to a writing practice. The frequency and the amount of time you choose to spend today — and moving forward — are up to you, but we recommend a minimum of fifteen uninterrupted minutes per day”.

Oh, my! As a music freak, this prompt made me smile, but the twist for the prompt is such a turn off (15 minutes, are you kidding me?). I presumed mostly because, song lyrics and its meanings has so much impact towards my emotion, as if my whole life could fit into one single lyric or that one song could transport you to a thousand memories.

Every time when words fail me, I use music to speak. I use songs for the words that I am afraid to say, or feelings that can’t be described.  When I need to be isolated from the distraction (even at work), I always have a headphone with me, and when travelling, an iPod in my hands. Music gets your mind off from everything else and I enjoyed being alone – listening to the melodies in my own world.

So here are the 3 songs I could think of on the fly, and within the given time of 15 mins.

This song has existed as my phone’s ringtone for many years. I couldn’t say that it is important, but it affects my emotion; remembering the misery and at times, when all I need was just the slightest attention. As a matter of fact, I was hoping that someone could understand the pain that I had been suffering, and the exhaustion from struggling with difficult challenges. In simpler term, saying “I’m fine” doesn’t really mean I am fine.

Nevertheless, I still strongly hold on to Alexandra Elle’s quotes: “I am thankful for my struggle because without it, I wouldn’t have stumbled upon my strength.”

Listening to Avril’s soulful voice singing to this song could really put me in tears. When dealing with depression, this is the song that reminds you that no matter what happens, you will eventually be greeted by happiness into your life. You will be there. The song brings serene and harmonious feelings and makes you believe that one day, one fine day, for once, you will be waking up and find blessings in every little thing in your life.

DAVID BOWIE (Featuring: Kristen Wiig) – Space Oddity

Yeap, no joke! Thanks to the film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, this song struck deep into my heart. The song stimulated my memory from one of the scenes where Walter Mitty had the courage and trusted himself to jump into the helicopter, knowing that he was risking his life to ride with a drunken pilot. But fear not, his life changes from that point where he made that decision. Every time the song was played, it reminds me of the 3 C’s: Choice, Chance, Change – You must make the Choice, take the Chance, if you want anything in life to Change. And reasons for why people change is because they have learned a lot or suffered enough.

One good quote that goes along with it: “I’ve been thinking a lot lately about taking chances, and how it’s really just about overcoming your fears. Because the truth is, every time you take a big risk in your life, no matter how it turns out, you’re always glad you took it.” – Scrub

I’m sure many can relate as music is also my way of expressing myself when I can’t show how I feel or when I want to say something but don’t know how. It’s always amazing when you find music that feels like it’s coming from inside you 🙂 Wonderful song choices!
